The Toy Sword

I have a wall covered in swords of different make size and country. When ever my cousin comes over he's always drawn to my room and always plays with my swords and takes them from the wall. My brothers of course join in and they are just as excited as my cousin. I realize that I never allow them to touch my swords or come in to my room even. But when my cousin is over I don't mind as much if they stay in my room for an hour acting out huge tragic battle sense of the best and quickest way to kill someone. Even when the bust my lights out and brake my granite handle. And I see that same excitement that boys get when they are allowed to touch this fascinating weapon that completed and magnified there masculinity. That simple joy of play with weapons that boys get. And I see that my brothers are just as excited as my cousin to be playing with the swords because they never can. And finally I have to kick them out and put everything back. But maybe the real fun is in the company. In coming up and comparing different ways to kill the enemy and different ways each man from every countries' words would be before they shoot someone with a pistol from Pirates of the Caribbean. Though I know if I left Austin in my room he would still make up his own epic battle all on his own as still have the time of his life. I don't know if this joy will last him his whole life or if maybe it's just one of those boy things. But I have a feeling that even the oldest man will turn into an ecstatic little boy when he picks up a sword and remembers the day he played with a small wooden sword with the other boys and the joy in it. It's not violent it's something else. It's natural and apart of them and it's their nostalgia and their special place. And I pity the man who never got to play with their pretend swords and have mock battles. Because every boy should. And I will make sure my children have the best mock battles ever and I will be sure to join in. And I know my husband will get the same look of pure happiness and fascination when he picks up his fake sword to battle with the equally joyful children. No matter how much a kid can love video games he will always pick up that you sword.
